The Junior Language Challenge is an annual competition run by EuroTalk. Over seven months, children who are aged 10 and under on 1st September 2015 will learn up to three new languages, starting this year with Portuguese. The competition takes place over three rounds, with live semi-finals in September and a grand final at Language Show Live in October, where finalists will compete for the top prize of a family holiday to Africa.
The aim of the JLC is to inspire a love of languages at a young age, and to provide primary teachers with a fun and motivating way to get pupils interested in the subject. EuroTalk want children to come away from the Challenge knowing that they can learn any language they like, not just the ones offered at school. Last year’s competitors learnt Italian, Japanese and Somali.
The competition costs just £5 to enter, which is donated to charity onebillion to support their work to transform education for children in developing countries.
“My son enjoyed every second of last year’s competition and I’d recommend it to all children” – mum and head teacher Julia Summers, Lincoln, whose son was a finalist in the JLC 2014.
