Foreign Language Spelling Bee

The aim of the Routes into Languages Foreign Language Spelling Bee is for students in Year 7 who are beginners in French, German and Spanish to practise and improve their vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation and memory skills in the target language.

At each stage of the competition pupils are given one minute to translate and spell words they have learnt. There are 4 stages: class, school, regional and national. It was set up in 2009 as a regional competition for the East Anglian region, and in 2010 it became a national competition across England, and Wales now have their own version of the competition. The competition was devised by Cambridge teacher, Jane Driver, who says, “Teachers are so busy nowadays – the Spelling Bee seems to have struck a chord with them as it fits easily into the curriculum without putting extra strain on their workload.”
