Dear (Name of MP),
I am writing to you as a constituent of yours on behalf of Speak to the Future, the campaign for languages in relation to the Manifesto for Languages published recently by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Languages. The Manifesto for Languages sets out the pressing case for improving our linguistic skills base in the UK and calls for all political parties to support a 5-point recovery programme for languages in their 2015 General Election manifestos.
The Manifesto for Languages quotes compelling evidence that there is a worsening linguistic deficit in the UK which is not only affecting our economy but our capacity for international engagement and the opportunities open to young people in their working and personal lives. Working together, government, business and education have been successful in revitalising the place of STEM subjects: languages are equally important to our future and now need similar commitment.
I would like to hear your views on these matters and in particular what more the next government can and should do to support teachers and schools in providing high quality education for all children from age 7.
With your permission I should like to post this letter and your response on the Speak to the Future website (www.speaktothefuture.org) which will publish the views of MPs on this subject.
In case you have not already seen it, the Manifesto for Languages can be read here: http://blog.britishcouncil.org/appg-modernlanguages/2014/07/13/press-release-appg-launches-manifesto-for-languages/
I look forward to your reply.
